[AI Burst] The Pink Slip Machine Just Went Mainstream

For the first time in recorded history, AI is the #1 reason American companies cite for cutting jobs.

Look, the Challenger, Gray & Christmas report dropped this week. And I keep coming back to one number: 25%.

In March 2026, U.S. employers announced 60,620 job cuts. Of those, 15,341 were attributed directly to AI. A quarter of all layoffs — in a single month. For context, AI accounted for 10% of cuts in February and just 5% for all of 2025.

That's not a trend. It's an acceleration. The speed at which companies are citing AI as the reason for cutting headcount tripled in 90 days.

And the companies doing it aren't struggling startups. Oracle, Meta, Dell. Meta alone is cutting 15,000 people, 20% of its entire workforce, with AI efficiency as the stated driver. These aren't edge cases anymore. This is what Q1 2026 looks like.

The conversation about AI and jobs has been abstract for years. "Roles will evolve." "New jobs will be created." Safe, vague, optimistic. This week's data ends that conversation.

Companies are now writing "AI" on layoff paperwork. The transition period we were told to prepare for? We're living it.

Do an AI audit of your own job this week. Write down the 10 things you spend the most time on. Mark which ones require judgment and which ones are process-based. The process-based ones are in immediate danger. The judgment layer — relationships, strategic thinking, human context — is where your career security actually lives.

In 1965, a U.S. government commission formally warned President Lyndon Johnson that automation would cause widespread unemployment within 20 years. They called it the "Triple Revolution." Johnson took it seriously enough to create the President's Commission on Technology, Automation, and Economic Progress.
